Instructional Writing - Making a cup of tea ☕

 Kia Ora,

For literacy this week, we have been learning how to write instructional text.

We had had two sheets that look like this:

(Sorry this is not quite finished yet) The two sheets we had to fill in were: How to make a cup of tea and how to construct a burger.
Here is my sheet on how to make tea so you can read it.
Have you written instructional text before?
Ka Kite see you next time!

  1. Hi Izzy. As the Race Officer for the Broadstairs Sailing Club I have to know how to wrte the Sailing Instructions so that sailors know where, when and how to sail a racing course. Ask Mummy if she has ever read any Sailing Instructions. She should have done when she was sailing dinghies. Love from Granddad Peter xx

  2. Hey Izzy,
I can’t read the pages on my phone for some reason, but I do know you’ve made very few cups of tea in your life. Why not write instructions for something you do know, something you can make off by heart, something delicious… mmmm quiche ….

    1. Hi Dad,
We had to do a piece of writing on how to make a cup of tea, otherwise I would've done one on how to make Quiche!
      Izzy :)

  3. Well, well, well…making a burger, now this is something we can all enjoy. Some instructions can be formal, like game rules, but could you make your instructions more fun by describing the ingredients. For example, rather than ‘put on 2 slices of tomatoes’ , say, ‘ after cutting the tomatoes, not too thick and not too chunky, choose the best slices from the middle, the roundest and most juicy (and definitely not the end pieces, they ruin a burger), then carefully place them on top of the crispy iceburg lettuce leaf’.
You are a very capable writer, so play with the language, describe things, and choose your verbs carefully. Have some fun with it! I look forward to reading about how to create the tastiest, most mouthwatering burger in the world 🍔 love Mum xx

  4. Kia ora Izzy. Ko Lucinda toku Ingoa. Instructional writing huh? One of my favourite forms of writing (I love narrative writing the best though). I thought you have done a great job explaining your blog post and what you had to do. I think that you chosen some great creative topics, I am looking forward to seeing your finished product! I do think next time you could make the photo a little more see-able and we can see what was challenging for you. I actually have done something quite similar to you before. Last year, I did a piece of instructional writing and I did it on how to create an origami swan. I even managed to make a video to go along with it.
I think you have done an OUTSTANDING Job.
    Keep up that creativity!
    Blog ya later!
